In this article, we want to share an interesting and equally frightening topic. Yes, as the title suggests, our subject is “what would happen to Edirne if a war broke out between Turkey and Greece”.
You might ask, “How did such an idea come to mind all of a sudden?” Well, anybody following current foreign news and developments—and surely some of you are— are undoubtedly aware of what is happening around the world, especially in our region.
Turkey is already dealing with a significant issue in Syria and has fallen into a quagmire of our own making due to poor strategic decisions. Of course, how Turkey will solve the issue of the millions of refugees who have (de facto) settled in this country remains a mystery. May God help.
But there is another danger that is quietly approaching, and that danger could one day surpass even the issue of Turkey’s security concerning Syria. That potential threat could come from an undesirable situation involving Greece.
Are you thinking, “Oh, come on, that couldn’t happen,” or adding, “The US would never allow two countries to go to war”? Well, you might be mistaken—or we might all be mistaken together. Are you thinking, “The US is Turkey’s eternal friend. It needs Turkey. It would never allow such a thing”? If so, take a moment to look back at past events around the world. See who the US’s real friends were.
For example, wasn’t the US once the closest supporter of the Shah of Iran? And then, who orchestrated the Khomeini plot and brought him to power in said country? How did Iran fall apart, and is the US a friend of Iran today?
Similarly, how did the US get rid of Egyptian President Mubarak through various schemes? Didn’t the same US eventually eliminate Gaddafi and Assad? It carried out all this malice for its own (and, in reality, Israel’s) interests in the region. There are so many more examples of how the US turns into the biggest enemy when its interests demand it, regardless of any supposed friendship.
To get to the point, one day Turkey might find herself in a major conflict with the US… and Greece, acting as a proxy in such case would be thinking, “Now is the time.” Try to imagine what would Edirne’s position be In such a situation as 140 km away from this town only, the US has been continuously building up military forces—tanks and all sorts of “war machines and materials”. Not to mention, F-35 fighter jets are also coming to Turkey’s neighbor soon. The picture shows that Greece is rapidly arming itself and growing stronger, right on Turkey’s doorstep—Edirne’s doorstep, to be precise.
In case someone loses their temper and pushes the button one day, have we ever thought about what would happen to this beautiful city – facing a very powerful attack to come from 140 km away, only? If the answer is no, it’s time to think about it.
How would Edirne be defended in such a scenario? Anybody with any ideas? For example, does this country have sufficient military units here, airports, planes, defense weapons, tanks, and other deterrent weapons? (Of course, we are not talking about classified military information here, but publicly available knowledge only.)
The only thing to do seems to be hope and pray that a scenario Edirne would never want to see doesn’t happen one day. Hopefully, Edirne doesn’t experience the tragic situations it went through during the Bulgarian (and Greek) invasions.
As someone who came to Edirne from Istanbul a year ago, the author ot these lines needs to admit that he does have some concerns about the above-mentioned issue. What about the people of Edirne, in general?
May God protect Edirne and Turkey from war and bad experiences.
