As the Ramadan month approaches its end, Edirne residents have received “a hike in bread prices” as a “gift” 🙂 for the Ramadan holiday. According to a decision made by the Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ETSO) on March 20, 2025, the price of a 220-gram loaf of bread has increased to 15 TL. The new price list has been posted in bakeries across the city, which have already started implementing the change.

This price hike, unfortunately, reflects the ongoing inflationary pressure in the country. The last remaining affordable basic food item for citizens, bread, is no longer exempt from rising costs.

Any Relationship with hikes in foreign exchange rates?

The price increase is linked to broader economic issues, particularly the country’s dependence on the US dollar. An economist once made a statement that went “high inflation is a result of high-interest rates”, and accordingly the government’s monetary policy has caused the value of the Turkish Lira to continuously depreciate, thereafter. This situation has been significantly affecting the average citizen, especially those (only a few, we know) “not benefiting from opportunities to accumulate wealth all along this crisis.

The key issue is that Turkey imports many essential goods, including fuel and raw materials, and purchases these in dollars. The rising cost of the dollar directly influences the price of goods in the country:

  1. Transportation Costs: As fuel is purchased in dollars, the cost of transportation rises, which in turn increases the cost of goods that are transported.
  2. Raw Materials: A significant portion of the raw materials used in industrial production is imported and paid for in dollars. As the dollar strengthens, the cost of these materials and the final products also increase.
  3. Supply and Demand: With the Turkish Lira losing value, citizens seek to protect their savings by buying dollars, increasing demand for the currency, which further drives up its value.

Bread Price Breakdown:

  • From now on, a 220-gram loaf of bread will be sold for 15 TL, a 5 TL increase.
  • Other bread options will also see price hikes: a 440-gram loaf will cost 30 TL, a 735-gram loaf of village or Trabzon bread will be priced at 50 TL, and a 1470-gram large village bread will cost 100.50 TL.

In summary this article is written to highlight how the impact of inflation, high transportation costs, and reliance on the US dollar for essential imports, negatively contributes to the rising cost of living in Turkey.
