
Restoration work is ongoing at the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, which is considered the “masterpiece” of Mimar Sinan. The mosque was taken into restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations in November 2021. Teams are working simultaneously on both the interior and exterior of the mosqueUnder the supervision of the scientific board, the restoration team is conducting meticulous work on every corner of the mosque.
Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer visited the mosque to inspect the progress and received information about the restoration from Ahmet Saraç, the Regional Director of Foundations.
What has been done so far?
The restoration team has carried out extensive work on the mosque’s four minarets, which required the most attention. Stone repairs and cleaning have been performed on the minarets. The original single turquoise tile located beneath the minaret domes was replicated, and 64 new tiles were placed in their positions.
As part of the restoration, the mosque’s main dome and courtyard domes were repaired. After strengthening and injection work, lead sheeting was completed on the domes.
The maintenance of the two main doors and three courtyard doors, which are notable for their intricate inlay craftsmanship and large size, was also carried out. Additionally, the mosque’s glass and wooden window frames were completely renewed.
In the restoration process, cement-based applications were removed, and the work was carried out to maintain the original structure.
Restoration continues on the interior and courtyard domes, with fresco and plaster ornamentation repairs. Tile cleaning and restoration are also ongoing. Furthermore, landscaping work is continuing in the mosque’s garden.
