The Kakava and Hıdırellez Festivals, one of Edirne’s oldest and most vibrant traditions, have officially kicked off with a lively series of events. Traditionally celebrated on May 5–6 each year, the festivities have been extended to four days this year, starting on May 3.
The celebrations opened at Sarayiçi, one of Edirne’s most symbolic locations. The first performance of the day was delivered by the Edirne Municipality Meriç Rhythm Group, setting an energetic tone for the festival. Events on the opening day are scheduled to continue until 9:00 PM.
Mayor Akın: Kakava is both historically and culturally significant
Edirne Mayor Filiz Gencan Akın emphasized the cultural and historical importance of Kakava in her statement:
“The Kakava Fire has been burning in Edirne for centuries. Hıdırellez, the herald of spring and hope, brings people together in celebration. This enchanting tradition is listed by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. I invite everyone to experience this ancient celebration in Edirne between May 3–6.”
The Kakava Festival stands out as a colorful expression of Roman culture and a joyful celebration of spring. With the ceremonial lighting of the Kakava fire, traditional dances, musical performances, and the ritual of releasing wishes into the Tunca River, Edirne welcomes thousands of visitors each year to share in this unique experience.
