In the 2024–2025 season, Turkey achieved a historic milestone in olive oil production, reaching 3.75 million tons of olives—the highest yield ever recorded. This abundant harvest, combined with similar output in other major producing countries, has led to a significant drop in prices. Last year, extra virgin olive oil was sold at around 500–600 TL per liter. This year, thanks to increased supply and market promotions, prices have fallen to 200–250 TL.
A Low-Yield Year Could Be Ahead
For the 2025–2026 season, a sharp decline in production is expected. According to initial estimates from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), olive production could decrease by 40%, falling to approximately 2.25 million tons. This would likely drive prices up again in the coming months. Experts highlight that current low prices present a valuable opportunity for consumers to stock up.
Global Supply Is Also Tightening
Major olive oil producers such as Spain and Tunisia are also facing challenges. In Spain, despite strong early flowering, extreme heat has damaged crops in some areas. Similar issues are expected in Tunisia. These developments may reduce global olive oil supply and push prices higher again worldwide.
Without Fair Prices, Sustainability Is at Risk
While the current prices are appealing for consumers, they pose serious challenges for producers. With production costs having increased by 100%, selling olive oil at half the price significantly reduces farmers’ income. This threatens long-term sustainability, as farmers may lose motivation to continue cultivating olives, putting years of investment at risk.
Domestic Consumption Must Increase, and Support Must Continue
Turkey has now become the world’s second-largest olive oil producer. Yet domestic consumption remains low—about 2 liters per person annually. Experts suggest that this figure should rise to at least 4–5 liters. Continued government support, effective promotion strategies, and stronger incentives for the local market are essential for maintaining momentum in the sector.
PERFECT FOR HEALTH
Olive oil is not only an economic asset—it’s also one of the healthiest oils available. Especially in its extra virgin, cold-pressed form, it retains powerful antioxidants and heart-friendly monounsaturated fats. It supports cardiovascular health, reduces inflammation, and helps boost the immune system. Extra virgin olive oil, obtained without chemical processing, is considered the highest quality and most beneficial type.
“Now Is the Time to Buy”
Now is an ideal time to purchase olive oil—not only due to favorable prices but also considering the uncertain outlook for the next season. However, for long-term success, a balanced approach is essential. Ensuring that both consumers and producers benefit will require continued support, awareness, and sustainable planning across the industry.
