Deputy Minister of the Interior Bülent Turan visited the “Natural Habitat Area” to be built next to the Stray Animal Temporary Shelter in Keşan district for inspection. During the visit, Turan received information about the planned works from Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer and Keşan Mayor Mehmet Özcan.
Turan, who was informed about the natural habitat area projects to be established in Edirne center, Keşan, and Uzunköprü districts, later toured the area for further inspection.
In his statement, Turan emphasized that efforts were being made to address issues related to stray animals. He mentioned that a law was being prepared in this regard, stating, “In the past, the formula was ‘catch, neuter, and release.’ After the latest law, the format has changed to ‘catch, rehabilitate, and keep in shelters until adoption.'”
Turan noted that the law assigns different duties to institutions regarding stray animals. He pointed out that while some municipalities were effectively implementing these duties, others were not. He said, “For example, there is a requirement to allocate 0.5% of the budget for the rehabilitation of these animals. There is also an obligation to build an animal shelter by a certain date. In summary, we want no stray animals on the streets of Turkey anymore. We want our children to walk safely, our elderly to pray peacefully, and a worry-free environment in markets, parks, and gardens.”
Turan also mentioned that an additional 50-acre area would be developed alongside the existing shelter in Keşan.
