The Turkish Grand National Assembly’s Research Committee on Violence and Discrimination Against Women met under the chairmanship of Hulki Cevizoğlu, AK Party Istanbul Deputy. Present at the meeting were Duygu Erseçen, Program Manager of the UN Women Turkey, Mustafa Ali Yurdupak, Deputy Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme Turkey Office and many more officials as well.

Mr. Cevizoğlu announced that the Committee would officially complete its work on March 21. Betül Bodur, Program Analyst at UN Women, discussed global statistics and shared the following data during her presentation:

“For example, in 18% of countries, there is discrimination related to citizenship and gender, or in 54% of countries, the crime of sexual assault is not explicitly defined based on the absence of consent.

72% of countries have set the minimum legal marriage age as 18 without exceptions. If we continue at this rate, it will take 134 years to achieve gender equality. Therefore, governments need to accelerate their efforts.

In 2023, unfortunately, it was recorded that every 10 minutes, an average of 140 women are killed by their intimate partners or family members. In 2023, 51,100 women were killed by their intimate partners or family members.

According to the 2023 UN Women Femicide Report, 21,700 women were killed in Africa, 18,500 women in Asia, 8,300 women in the Americas, 2,300 women in Europe, and 300 women in Oceania. The same report shows that the percentage of femicides committed by intimate partners or family members is 60.2% for women, compared to 11.8% for men. Unfortunately, the home is recorded as the most dangerous place for women and girls.”
