Every now and then, there’s a bit of good news for animal lovers, thankfully. Nearly 6,500 stray animals will soon be able to live safely and comfortably at a new modern shelter spanning 122 acres in Keşan. The facility will offer not just shelter, but also medical treatment, spaying/neutering, and adoption services.
Mayor Inspects the Project Site
Keşan Mayor, Op. Dr. Mehmet Özcan, recently visited the construction site of what is now the largest stray animal shelter in the Thrace region. New regulations and natural living conditions for animals are being implemented across this expansive area.
Facility Expansion Boosts Capacity
The original shelter site, allocated to Keşan Municipality in 2017, has now been expanded by an additional 50 acres with support from the Edirne Governor’s Office. The total 122-acre facility is designed to support all phases of animal care—from rescue and treatment to long-term housing.
10 Square Meters Per Dog
The shelter is divided into zones ranging from 500 to 600 square meters, and each dog is given approximately 10 square meters of space. Shaded areas, shelters from rain, and regular food and water are all provided to ensure animal welfare. The expanded design is set to accommodate up to 6,500 animals comfortably.
Health Services, Sterilization, and Permanent Homes
Stray animals from Keşan, İpsala, Enez, and nearby villages will be brought to the facility, where they will be sterilized and receive medical care. Afterwards, they will be released into specially designed natural living areas within the shelter. This approach enhances both public safety and animal well-being.
Adoptions and Pet Passports
The facility doesn’t just offer shelter—it also promotes adoption. Citizens wishing to adopt an animal are provided with a pet passport and official adoption papers. Officials see this as an important step in fostering a culture of compassion toward animals.
A Regional Role Model in Animal Welfare
Construction continues on the new sections of the facility, with perimeter walls going up and water lines being laid to finished paddocks. This shelter is not only a milestone for Keşan but is also poised to become a model project for all of Thrace.
