A New Era for Enez: Eco-Friendly Tourism to Meet Modern Design
Edirne’s beautiful coastal town Enez is entering a new chapter with a major environmental and infrastructure project supported by the European Union. The joint initiative between Enez Municipality and Bulgaria’s Tundzha Municipality under the Turkey–Bulgaria IPA Project is transforming the region with a €1 million budget. Once completed, the project will make Enez one of Edirne’s rising tourism stars with its modern, sustainable, and eco-conscious design.
Cross-Border Cooperation for a Sustainable Future
Enez Mayor Özkan Günenç shared that the three-year project is now in its final phase. “As part of our partnership with Tundzha Municipality, we’ll receive three electric garbage trucks in December. In February, we’ll launch the tender for a 3,200-meter coastal arrangement. This is a major investment in Enez’s future,” he said.
Solar-Powered Coastal Transformation
The project focuses on a full-scale renewal of Altınkum Beach. Solar-powered kiosks, wooden walking paths, and environmentally friendly lighting systems will give Enez a modern, green identity. Along the 2,500-meter coastline, 11 solar kiosks, 66 wooden gazebos, and solar street lighting will make the beach both sustainable and visually stunning at night.
Likely Inspired by Fethiye’s Coastal Success
Enez’s coastal redesign draws inspiration from the successful seaside planning of Fethiye — one of Turkey’s top tourism destinations. Like Fethiye, Enez will feature eco-friendly wooden paths, solar-powered lights, and nature-integrated facilities designed to enhance visitor comfort without harming the environment. This vision positions Enez as a sustainable tourism hub that appeals not just to summer residents but also to day-trippers and eco-conscious travelers.
New Investments Shaping Enez’s Future
The EU-funded project introduces several green investments to Enez, from electric waste trucks to solar kiosks and recycling bins — all supporting cleaner tourism and higher living standards. These initiatives are not only modernizing the town’s infrastructure but also strengthening Enez’s brand value as an eco-friendly coastal destination.
Infrastructure and Comfort Hand in Hand
Mayor Günenç also highlighted ongoing infrastructure improvements: “After the natural gas installations, all damaged roads will be renewed. Our work continues nonstop in both the town center and the beach area. Every summer we serve nearly 150,000 people, and with these upgrades, Enez will be ready for the future.”

As Edirne’s only seaside district, Enez uniquely combines history, nature, and the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Saros. With its new eco-tourism infrastructure and renewed coastal landscape, Enez is poised to become a key travel destination for both local and international visitors — the new shining star of the Thracian coast.
