The Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry has taken an important step to ensure that Edirne White Cheese, one of the most valuable pieces of the city’s cultural heritage, receives the international recognition it deserves.
This special product, registered as a geographical indication in Turkey in 2004, was officially recorded on December 26, 2024, under the PDO-TR-03390 number following an application to the European Commission. This registration not only ensures the protection of the product but also opens the door for Edirne’s rich gastronomic heritage to be appreciated on a global scale.
The Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry made the following statement regarding the achievement:
“Edirne White Cheese has a unique taste and quality thanks to its centuries-old traditional production methods and the region’s specific climatic conditions. This unique heritage, which has lasted from the Ottoman Empire to the present day, has become an important value that introduces our city not only at a national but also at a global level. With its registration at the European Commission, this valuable product will provide sustainable income for our producers and make significant contributions to Edirne’s economic development.
Currently, the application carried out under the leadership of our Chamber is the first application from Turkey in the cheese category to the European Commission under Regulation 2024/1143, which came into effect on May 13, 2024, regarding quality schemes for agricultural products and foodstuffs.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all stakeholders who contributed to this success, especially our cheese producers and Geographical Indication Consultant Huriye Özener, as well as our entire team. Our efforts will continue to expand the reach of Edirne White Cheese in international markets. This registration marks a critical turning point for the future of our city’s geographical indication products, and as the Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we will continue to support the protection of our regional values and ensure greater success both nationally and internationally.”
