Edirne to host 2024 U23 European Rowing Championships

The city of Edirne, Turkey, continues to expand its range of tourism achievements. Alongside the Kırkpınar and Kakava festivals, another significant event will soon take place in this historic city. This time, the event will be international. Edirne will host the U23 European Rowing Championships on September 7-8, 2024.

In the vote held by European Rowing on September 24 in Racice, Czech Republic, Edirne was chosen over other candidates to host the 2024 U23 European Rowing Championships. This will be the first major rowing event in Turkey featuring Olympic boat classes. With the construction of a new course along the Maritsa River in Edirne, the country will gain its first permanent rowing course meeting international standards.

ROWING ON MARITZA RIVER

Originating from Bulgaria and flowing through Edirne, the river forms a natural course in the Karaağaç District, measuring 2,700 meters in length and 251 meters in width.

ERTÜRK: “A FIRST FOR TURKISH ROWING SPORTS”

Erhan Ertürk, President of the Turkish Rowing Federation, who followed the voting process in person, expressed his pride in bringing such a significant event to Turkey. He stated, “We are proud to achieve such a milestone for our country within the first year of our tenure. This is a tremendous development for Turkish rowing. For the first time, an international rowing race featuring Olympic boat classes will be held in our country. I would like to thank the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Edirne Governorship, and all the institutions that supported us in unlocking our potential and securing the hosting rights for the U23 European Championships.”

Ertürk also mentioned following; “We will start using the river upon completion of the project on the Maritsa River. Before the event, we have test races. The U19 Turkey Cup and the U19 Turkey Championship will be held in Edirne. The Balkan Championships will take place a week after the European Championships. These four races are confirmed for Edirne. I believe we will have activities here every week once we become operational next year. Our national team camps, national team races, and numerous other races, including the European Championships, will take place. Our aim is to elevate Edirne even further with the Senior European Championships and the Senior World Championships.”
