Edirne Municipality is finally taking steps to implement the “pet cemetery” project, which was unanimously approved in the municipal council in April 2021 but had not been realized until now. Mayor Filiz Gencan Akın stated that the project would be located near the “Natural Living Area” planned for street animals.
Akın mentioned, “After determining the location for our natural living area, we aim to establish the pet cemetery without moving too far from that area. This is a very important step,” she said.
During the regular municipal council meeting held on April 6, 2021, Edirne City Council unanimously accepted the proposal for a “pet cemetery,” aiming to ensure pets are buried hygienically and without spreading diseases. However, nearly four years have passed since this decision, and no action had been taken on the project.
This project had been part of Mayor Filiz Gencan Akın’s election promises before the March 31 local elections. In the project titled “Little Friends Cemetery,” Akın stated, “Together with the Street Animals Natural Living Park and Rehabilitation Center, we will establish the Little Friends Cemetery for our pet companions. When these small friends, who share our homes and are part of our families, complete their lives, we will bury them in a suitable area in a way that honors the love we shared. We will also mark their graves with memorial objects to keep their memory alive.”
Mayor Akın added that after the location for the natural living area was determined, the pet cemetery would be set up in the same region.
