For centuries, Edirne has been recognised as a city of history and culture. Today, the Meriç River adds a different dimension to this identity.

The river’s wide water corridor, stable flow conditions, and proximity to the city centre make it suitable for organized rowing activities. Over time, these natural advantages have been shaped into a functional sports environment capable of hosting structured training and competitive events.

This has positioned the Meriç River not only as a natural landmark, but also as a growing point of international sporting activity.

Vision and Development of the Rowing Project

The development of rowing on the Meriç River was driven by a long-term vision to establish Edirne as a recognized location in the international rowing calendar.

A key role in this process was played by Nesim İba, who supported the development of rowing activities in the city through TED Edirne College.

The project also received institutional support from the Turkish Rowing Federation and the Edirne Governorship, which helped transform the idea into an operational international-level rowing venue.

From Local Initiative to International Competition Stage

Once developed, the Meriç River Rowing Course began hosting national and international-level competitions.

These events brought athletes, teams, and sporting communities from different regions to Edirne, introducing the city to a wider international sports audience.

Rather than being a one-time project, the rowing activities on the river have become part of a recurring sporting calendar, reinforcing Edirne’s visibility in the rowing world.
