On December 7, 2024, the Edirne Local History Group, which is actively involved in valuable cultural activities in the city, hosted a distinguished scholar, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yaraş. During this meeting, Prof. Yaraş shared invaluable insights on the topic of “Archaeological Studies in Edirne and Saros Bay and the Influence of Roman Civilization.”
At the beginning of the event, we couldn’t help but feel disappointed by the information shared, as was obvious that Edirne, which sits on a precious archaeological treasure, remains far from its potential, especially regarding its place in the tourism sector. This is largely due to the apathy of the city’s past administrators and the state’s neglect of the city, which has led to it being treated as a “stepchild.” Unfortunately, what is even more concerning is that, despite the significant role played by previous administrators in this failure, the indifference of the city’s inhabitants has contributed equally to this situation. In other words, it gives the impression that the city has also been lacking in social awareness.
In this context, Prof. Yaraş’s ongoing efforts to uncover and discover the archaeological treasures that exist in this city and the Thrace region, despite these adverse conditions, deserve our full admiration.
Regarding the conference content, here are some of the key points shared by Prof. Yaraş:
Edirne was established around 1900 years ago by Roman Emperor Hadrian. The city was of great importance during that period due to the two major roads from Europe to Istanbul passing through Edirne.
In the area now known as Edirne Kaleiçi, many structures were built during this ancient period. However, it appears that these structures are buried underground, and it has become impossible to bring this historical treasure to the surface due to the buildings currently standing on top. Excavations cannot be carried out in this region, and there is neither the necessary interest nor the financial support for such efforts.
Moreover, in Saros, a region in Thrace which is unfortunately only used as a summer resort currently, there are supposed to be significant historical remains. Prof. Yaraş has even conducted excavations there and uncovered, for example, the ancient Roman city walls. It has become clear that the Romans had a substantial presence in this area, but unfortunately, concerned authorities have not provided the necessary support for further archaeological work.
In summary, the region, with its continuous settlement and civilization history stretching from Roman times to the present (and even earlier), holds significant archaeological treasures beneath the surface. However, due to the apathy of local administrators and the state’s indifference, these treasures are at risk of being lost. Moreover, there has been no effective protest or courageous stance by civil society organizations and the local population, against this situation. Sadly, the situation seems unchanged.
It’s a pity that the notable figures and organizations in this city, with a position of respect in the community do not seem to have shown the necessary effort in regards, to change the picture the other way round. We regret having to share our humble opinion that they have rather preferred the easy way to create their own “happy world” without considering the broader issues that would have needed much more of an effort and even sacrifice, likely.
So, the question arises: can individuals, especially those in respected positions within society, do more for their hometowns? Shouldn’t they take the lead in supporting efforts like those of Prof. Yaraş? And could they not offer more effective societal support for such ongoing struggles? These are questions that thoughtful, conscientious people who love their land would surely be able to answer.
In conclusion, we would like to express our deepest respect for the services provided by the esteemed scholar, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yaraş, and we are grateful to the “Local History Group” for giving us the opportunity to listen to this important figure and gain valuable insights on such invaluable topics.
