AMERICAN TEACHER IN EDIRNE

Vicki Lynn Parsa, a U.S. citizen, started working in Edirne after seeing the “teacher wanted” advertisement online and wishes to live there for many years. Parsa, who previously loved Turkey during her vacation, stated that she also loves Edirne, describing it as a “captivating and characterful” city where people are friendly.

Parsa, 42, who lived in the state of Ohio in the U.S. until 3 months ago, first came to Turkey for vacation in March. After spending three weeks in Istanbul and being impressed by the trip, Parsa decided she wanted to live in Turkey and began looking at job listings. Seeing an ad for an English teacher position at TED Edirne College, Parsa contacted the school.

After the agreement, Parsa, along with her American husband and 5 children, moved to Edirne three months ago and joined the school’s teaching staff.

In her free time, Parsa explores the historical and cultural areas of the city.

– “Edirne is a captivating city”

Parsa, who previously loved Turkey during her vacation, stated that she also loves Edirne, describing it as a “captivating and characterful” city where people are friendly. Parsa mentioned that they are trying to adapt to their new life with her family, saying, “I have 5 children, and 4 of them are receiving education at the school where I work. My 17-year-old son is preparing for university.”

– “Education is taken more seriously than in America”

Parsa noted that trying to speak English with young children is an interesting experience. Due to the language barrier, they communicate more through gestures and facial expressions, which she finds enjoyable. She said, “I think students and families take education more seriously in Turkey than in America. Here, children are enthusiastic about learning English. My students and teacher friends are very warm. They were very helpful in getting used to school.”

Parsa stated that she is slowly starting to learn Turkish, making communication easier. She hasn’t started a Turkish course yet but knows words related to daily dialogues like “hello” and “how are you.” She expressed her desire to learn Turkish as soon as possible, adding, “I want to own a house and become a Turkish citizen if possible in Turkey.”
