The Balkan Rowing Championship has started in Edirne. By hosting this event, Edirne is marking another significant milestone in the sport of rowing. Approximately 300 athletes from 8 Balkan countries are participating in the championship, which is taking place on the Meriç River course in Edirne.
Preparations for the event were completed ahead of the championship, and the course is now ready for the races. Nesim İba, Chairman of the Balkan Rowing Championship Organizing Committee, invited the public to attend the races and support the national team.
Last week, Edirne hosted the European Rowing Championship, which was held in Turkey for the first time. Following that event, the Balkan Championship further cements the city’s place in international sports. Erhan Ertürk, President of the Turkish Rowing Federation, expressed pride in hosting the Balkan Championship on the Meriç River course right after the European Championship. Dorin Alupei, Secretary General of the Balkan Rowing Union, praised Turkey for successfully organizing the European Championship and expressed confidence that the Balkan Championship would build on that success.
“SIGNIFICANT BOOST TO EDİRNE’S ECONOMY”
Nesim İba highlighted that the proximity of the Balkan countries had resulted in high family participation, and as a result, more visitors from these neighboring countries were expected to be seen in the streets of Edirne.
He said, “The championship is also providing a significant boost to Edirne’s economy, with athletes and their families settling in the city, leading to full hotel occupancy.”
İba emphasized that the public was becoming increasingly familiar with the excitement of the national team’s victories, and this enthusiasm continued to grow with each event.
About the Balkan Rowing Championship
The Balkan Rowing Championship is an annual international competition bringing together rowing teams from Balkan countries. The host city changes each year, and in 2024 the event took place on the Meriç River in Edirne.
