According to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the first phase of the project, which covers the Çerkezköy-Kapıkule section spanning 153 kilometers, is planned to be completed by the end of 2025.
Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that Turkey holds a pivotal position in transportation between Asia and Europe, and the Halkalı-Kapıkule High-Speed Train Project constitutes the first part of the Asia-Europe corridor. This project is crucial in establishing the European connection of the Silk Road route passing through Turkey.
TRAVEL TIME BETWEEN ISTANBUL AND EDIRNE WILL GO DOWN TO 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES
The project consists of three phases: the Kapıkule-Çerkezköy section (153 kilometers), the Çerkezköy-Ispartakule section (67 kilometers), and the Ispartakule-Halkalı section (9 kilometers). Upon completion of the Halkalı-Kapıkule project, the travel time between Halkalı and Kapıkule will reduce from 4 hours to 1 hour and 30 minutes for passengers and from 6 hours and 30 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes for freight. The project is estimated to cost 2.75 billion TL, and trains operating on the line will travel at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

Minister Uraloğlu also highlighted the potential benefits for Edirne, stating that extending the line to Europe from Kapıkule would enhance Edirne’s status as a tourist destination, attracting more visitors and positively impacting trade at Kapıkule.
IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION HIGH-SPEED TRAIN LINE WILL PROVIDE TO EDIRNE
From Edirne’s perspective, the high-speed train service will undoubtedly contribute significantly to its tourism sector, attracting more visitors and boosting the city’s income. Additionally, it will foster cultural and social integration with Istanbul, one of the world’s foremost cultural centers.
This influx of tourists will not only boost the local economy through increased spending on accommodation, dining, and entertainment but also create employment opportunities in the tourism sector. Additionally, the heightened tourist activity will stimulate growth in related industries such as retail, transportation, and hospitality.
In conclusion, the high-speed train service between Istanbul and Edirne is poised to bring about substantial economic, cultural, and social benefits for both cities and the regions they connect.
