The Governor of Edirne recently visited and inspected the restoration work at the nearly six-century-old Edirne Palace.
The palace, which will become a new tourism route for Edirne and significantly contribute to the city’s tourism potential, is being restored under the auspices of the National Palaces Directorate.

Brief Information about Edirne Palace
Construction of the Edirne New Palace began in 1450 during the reign of Sultan Murad II and was completed during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet.
The palace was continuously repaired and new structures were added during the reigns of Suleiman the Magnificent and other sultans. However, the palace suffered significant damage during the 18th century due to major earthquakes, fires, and the Russian occupation.
Restoration efforts continued in the 19th century. The palace contained many important structures, including Fatih Sultan Mehmet’s Cihannüma Pavilion and various sultan’s apartments. Architect Sinan solved the water problems and created a canal around the palace, forming the Hasbahçe garden. New pavilions were built during the reigns of Sultan Murad IV and Sultan Mehmet IV. This palace is also said to have served as an architectural model that inspired the later construction of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul.
