Saros Gulf, located on the northern edge of the Aegean in northwestern Turkey, is known not only for its natural beauty but also for the remarkable clarity and ecological balance of its waters. Thanks to its strong circulation system, it is often described as one of the rare self-cleaning seas in the world. This natural feature helps preserve its deep blues, turquoise tones, and overall water quality throughout the year.
Uzunkum Beach is located on the Saros Gulf coastline near Mecidiye village and İbrice Harbor in Keşan district, Edirne Province, about two hours from Edirne city centre. One of the quieter stretches along the Saros coast, Uzunkum remains a relatively untouched beach destination. Compared with more developed or crowded coastal resorts, it offers a more natural, peaceful, and restrained seaside experience.
The following text is based on the impressions of Edirne-based writer and contributor Mehmet Çoğ, who visited the area with his wife and documented his observations in a reflective, personal style (14 July 2025)
A Sea That Feels Alive
Saros Gulf stands out in the northern Aegean for its exceptionally clear waters and shifting shades of blue. From deep navy tones to bright turquoise reflections, the sea constantly changes with light, wind, and weather conditions.
Uzunkum represents one of the calmer expressions of this natural setting — a place where the landscape still feels relatively undisturbed and open.
The Journey Through Mecidiye
Access to Uzunkum is typically via Mecidiye village. The route passes through rocky terrain and quarry areas before splitting toward İbrice Harbor and Uzunkum beach.
A short stop in Mecidiye is often part of the experience. A simple tea in the village coffeehouse and last-minute supplies from local shops are common before continuing toward the coast, where prices tend to increase significantly closer to the sea.
First Impressions of Uzunkum
As the road approaches the shoreline, the characteristic colors of Saros become visible — clear blues, turquoise shades, and a wide open bay framed by green hills.
At the entrance, a controlled access point manages vehicles and visitors. The system is simple and functional, contributing to an organized flow rather than a chaotic beach environment.
Inside, wooden walkways help protect the natural sand structure while guiding movement along the shore. Despite seasonal visitors, the overall atmosphere remains calm, orderly, and relatively quiet.
Two Different Ways to Experience the Beach
Uzunkum is divided into two main usage areas.
One side operates as a managed beach section with sunbeds, shaded areas, and basic facilities. The other side is open for visitors who bring their own equipment and prefer a more informal beach experience.
Both groups share the same sea and natural environment; the difference lies mainly in comfort level and personal preference.
Costs and Practical Reality
Like many coastal destinations in Turkey, Uzunkum reflects the rising costs of seasonal tourism.
Reported average prices include:
- Vehicle entrance: 100 TL
- Per person entry: 50 TL
- Ice cream: 100 TL
- Soft drinks: 80 TL
- Hamburger: 420 TL
- Pizza or meat dishes: 500 TL
- Sunbeds and shaded areas: around 1500 TL
Because of this, many visitors prefer to shop in Mecidiye before reaching the beach.
Sea Conditions and Natural Features
The water at Uzunkum is typically calm and exceptionally clear, consistent with the broader characteristics of Saros Gulf. However, visitors are advised to be cautious of sea urchins in certain rocky areas and to use appropriate footwear when entering the water.
One of the defining qualities of the beach is its silence — there is no loud music, no dense construction, and no urban noise dominating the coastline.
Reflections on Preservation
Uzunkum remains one of the less developed stretches of the Saros coastline. Compared to nearby areas that have experienced more intensive seasonal development, it still retains a relatively natural character.
The key question for the future is whether this balance can be maintained as tourism pressure increases across the region.

Uzunkum is not just a beach destination but part of a larger natural system within Saros Gulf. Its value lies in its simplicity, calmness, and relatively preserved environment.
As coastal development continues in surrounding areas, places like Uzunkum highlight the importance of sustainable interaction between tourism and nature.
