In Edirne, the price of hamsi (anchovy), which was previously sold for 250 lira per kilogram, has dropped to 100 lira. Boxes of fish quickly sold out. The price drop pleased both sellers and buyers. Fishmongers stated that the price decrease occurred due to rising temperatures.
Citizens also expressed their happiness about the drop in prices.
Hamsi is widely consumed due to its low price. This fish can be prepared in many different ways, including grilled, baked, wrapped in paper, steamed, pilaki, and stew. Despite being a dark-fleshed fish, it is very suitable for steaming.
In the summer, since it is fat-free, it is preferred for grilling or steaming rather than frying. Hamsi caught in winter is salted and stored. This is called anchovy. Additionally, it is used in the production of fish oil and fish meal.
It constitutes about two-thirds of Turkey’s total fish catch.
