Reaching Edirne from Istanbul is moving closer to a fast, same-day journey, as test runs begin on the first completed section of the Halkalı–Kapıkule High-Speed Rail Project—Turkey’s main rail corridor to Europe.
The 153 km Çerkezköy–Kapıkule section is now in testing following the completion of all infrastructure, superstructure, and technical railway systems. High-speed train sets are operating in both directions on selected parts of the line to verify performance and safety.
The full line is structured in three sections: Kapıkule–Çerkezköy (153 km), Çerkezköy–Ispartakule (67 km), and Ispartakule–Halkalı (8.4 km), ultimately linking Istanbul directly with Edirne and the European border.
Travel time reductions are significant. Passenger journeys are expected to drop from around 4 hours to approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, while freight transport is projected to decrease from 8 hours and 30 minutes to about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h, the line is being built as a double-track, electrified, and fully signaled railway, suitable for both passenger and cargo transport.
Strategically, the project strengthens Turkey’s rail connection with Europe, forming a modern segment of the historic Silk Railway corridor.
Why this matters for travelers
For visitors, this is not just infrastructure—it directly changes how a trip is planned. Edirne shifts from a secondary add-on to a more realistic extension of an Istanbul stay, with far less time required to get there and back.
As the line approaches full operation, Edirne is set to become one of the most accessible historic cities near Istanbul—particularly for those interested in Ottoman architecture, cross-border culture, and routes toward the Balkans.
For those who may consider visiting Edirne in the future, the new line is expected to make it much easier to include it in an Istanbul itinerary. You can explore more about the city in our Edirne travel guide.
Note for travelers planning a visit
The Istanbul–Edirne high-speed rail project is currently in a testing and phased completion stage, with sections of the line already undergoing trial operations. Once fully operational, the route is expected to reduce travel time between Istanbul and Edirne to approximately 1.5 hours, making Edirne significantly more accessible as a short trip or extension of an Istanbul itinerary.
